Following their early ouster from the ongoing FIFA Confederations Cup, the head coach of Cameroon, Hugo Broos, has blasted his players for putting up a different behaviour from what it used to be when they became champions of Africa.
The Indomitable Lions, who lifted the 2017 Nations Cup in Gabon early this year, failed to go past the group stages at the eight-team tournament, organized to test-run facilities ahead of the Fifa World Cup in 2018.
Cameroon lost their opening game against Copa America winners, Chile, 2-0, drew 1-1 against Asian champions, Australia, and lost 3-1 to World Cup holders, Germany to finish bottom of the group.
And Broos has pointed out the players’ attitude as the reason for their poor performance in Russia.
“The group was not like it was in Gabon,” the Belgian gaffer said in an interview with Cameroon Tribune.
“I always tell players that glory is hard to bear. Once you win something, there are players who start behaving differently.
“I noticed it during this Confederations Cup. No one complained because he was sitting on the bench at the AfCON. Now there are some players who have started to complain.”
Broos’ men will be playing away to the Super Eagles of Nigeria in August and at home against them within seven days in a bid to return to Russia when the World Cup finals begin in the summerof 2018.
And Broos have vowed not to accept the behavioural change from his players.
“We will see next time what I will do, because I do not accept this kind of behavior. Again, it is not because we won the AfCON that we’ve arrived. The journey is just beginning, it is not yet the destination. And that, everyone has to be aware of that,” he added.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria are ahead of Cameroon by 4 points in the World Cup qualifiers, having won the games against Zambia and Algeria – the other two teams in the group.
As the race for the ticket resumes, the Eagles will host Cameroon next in the qualifying series in Uyo on August 28.
