Confederations Cup: Germany thrash Mexico to set up Chile final

Germany beat Mexico 4-1 in their semifinal clash at the 2017 Fifa Confederations Cup on Thursday to set up a meeting with Chile in the final.

Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka swept home a Benjamin Henrichs pass from 20 yards to put the World champions ahead only six minutes into the game.

And two minutes after the opener, he slotted home from Timo Werner’s through ball to double their lead.

In the second half, Werner tapped home Jonas Hector’s pass to make it 3-0. Marco Fabian pulled one back for Mexico, before Amin Younes added a fourth for Germany in stoppage time.

Mexico missed plenty chances which could have helped them level when they were 2-0 down but squandered all.

With twenty six shots resulting to one goal in the 89th-minute, Mexico made a too-late to threaten a possible comeback.

Germany will now go on to play Sunday’s final against Copa America champions, Chile in St Petersburg, while Mexico face Portugal in a third-fourth play-off earlier that day.
